Botanical Nomenclature
Perhaps you have already noticed that the name of an orchid is always composed of two names (Laelia purpurata, Cattleya walkeriana, Oncidium flexuosum) and it is the same with the name of all plants. The first name is called a genus, which groups a large number of plants that have certain characteristics in common, for example: Cattleya (nobilior, walkeriana, intermedia, mossiae, trianae, percivaliana). The second name is called species.
Depois podemos ter ainda um terceiro nome, que é chamado de epíteto varietal que nothing but the variety: Cattleya walkeriana varsemi alba. Furthermore, a fourth name can be followed, which is the clonal epithet. This is a term that is used in the same sense as a person's name. Ex. Cattleya walkeriana var semi alba"Tokyo". This term is enclosed in quotation marks.
In the example, Cattleya wakerianas semi alba "tokio" we have: a plant of the genus Cattleya, of the species walkeriana, of the species semi alba variety called Tokio.
